Year 10 Drawing/Painting workshops
KEY Concept: Aesthetics
RELATED CONCEPTS: Expression, Interpretation, Visual culture
GLOBAL CONTEXT: Personal and Cultural Expression
STATEMENT of INQUIRY: The exploration of skills, techniques and processes provides the vehicle for discovery, growth and self expression.
Inquiry Questions:
FACTUAL: Drawing is a traditional, established form of art
CONCEPTUAL: Do we all see the same thing? To what extent does my imagination overpower what I see? Does drawing describe what I see? Observational drawing is more about seeing than actually drawing
DEBATABLE: Is there any such thing as a good or bad drawing? To what extent are my observations are a reflection of who I am and what I see.
TASKS: Metamorphasis
Objective: To develop both observational skills, mark making techniques and expressive behaviors.
Front load: Demonstrate and practice 6 different drawing techniques. 1, Continuous tone 2, Cross hatching 3, stipple 4, scribble 5, directional line and 6, Rendering

Document the ever changing nature of a selected piece of fruit. Each day observe the fruit for 15-20 mins documenting the change in shape, colour, form and texture.
The first 2-3 lessons you should observe with pencil and then start bringing in the coloured dry media to record the fruits colour, value, texture, form and the ever changing nature of these elements.
Media could include but is not limited to pencil, chalk pastel, colour pencil and oil pastel.
Each daily drawing can be A5 in size and can be added to via photographs that record each days metamorphosis or change. You should annotate each drawing making notes about the changes that you have observed.
The drawings can be done directly into the workbook or can be done on loose paper and then stuck into the workbook.

Things in my Pocket
Concept: Creativity and Identity Duration 3 lessons
Objective: Develop compositional skills. Observe value, tone and texture. Apply a range of mark making techniques in order to describe different surfaces/materials.
Objective: Develop compositional skills. Observe value, tone and texture. Apply a range of mark making techniques in order to describe different surfaces/materials.
Start by creating a value range in order to practice the pressure required to create different values or tones.
You could do this with one pencil, 6B or use a range of pencils as the example suggests.
Use your daily items from your pocket or backpack to create an interesting composition on a photocopier on black and white settings. Plan an A3 composition that moves the viewer's eye around the page.

Use shapes with line, pattern, texture and contrast to create interest for the viewer.
Use the photocopy to draw a grid as a reference for transferring the image to your own drawing paper. Draw your image on A3 paper using the grid transfer method.
Observe and apply the same values and textures that you see. Really push the black areas to make them as dark as they are in the original photocopy.
Ensure that Blacks, Whites and Greys are observed in order to have a wide range of value.

Observation skills, value range, emphasis of black. Use of a wide range of mark making techniques within one medium.

Contrasting Fruit
Objective: Develop observation drawing. Describe contrast in colour, form and texture. Extend drawing techniques and mark making styles. Use colour as an element of art to describe other elements.
Describe 3 different fruits using coloured drawing media such as colour pencil.
Lesson one to two and a half, compose one A3 page drawing that shows the fruit in colour. Record the form, shape and its texture. Observe carefully to describe the surface, light and shadow. Use lights to emphasise the direction of the light and the shadows it creates.
Lesson two and a half and three.Cut the fruit in half to reveal the inside colour, texture etc.
Create a one page composition that uses both wet and dry coloured media.
Record the contrast of colour, texture, shape and value.

Painting
Wayne Thiebaud Paul Cezanne Norma Wilson
Duration 3-4 lessons.
Extend into small paintings. Practice the 6 painting techniques of Wash, wet on wet, dry brush, overpainting, sgraffito and impasto.
Use the second composition to create a small 20X20c painting applying acrylic painting techniques.
Use the artist's Wayne Thiebaud, Cezanne and Norma Wilson as reference.

Dine on mixed media
Duration: 3 lessons
Objective:
Extend observational drawing. Combine both precise observation and detail with expressive mark making. Use mixed media and a combination of wet and dry media techniques. Extend mark making techniques along with art vocabulary.

Jim Dine - Mixed Media drawings
Look carefully at a potted plant. Compose an image of the plant that fills an A3 page. The image should touch at least 3 sides of the compositional frame.
Lightly sketch the form of the plant using an HB pencil. Keep in mind you may want to erase or modify your drawing.
Focus on areas of detail. You should also reference the artist Jim Dine https://www.pinterest.co.uk/maryderaco/jim-dine-florals/ and note his technical approach to drawing. Once details are complete, build into the negative pace first with wet media and then follow with different forms of dry media. Emphasise the difference between areas of detail and refinement with those that are far more expressive and gestural.
Be gestural and experimental with your application of media.

Dance with me
Duration: 1-2 lessons.
Objective:
Expressive, gestural, abstract expressionism. Extend mark making confidence. Explore expression through music with an emphasis on movement.
Tasks:
Use large sheets of paper: You may need to join several sheets of paper together.
Lay the paper on the ground and ensure that your entire body can fit on the sheets.
Hold a dry drawing media in both hands. This could be graphite, charcoal, pencil, biro, sharpie. It depends on how messy you are prepared to get.
Start with symmetrical movements, build multiple lines.
Create layers through movement of your arms and the rotation of your torso.
Complete your composition by going back and reworking areas with other media such as white paint, oil pastel, dye etc. Consider your prior learning.
You will install your work in the atrium, hanging it from the wires above. There will be a supporting video in the atrium that documents the process of the classes which supports the installation.
Use the artists Heather Hansen and Tony Orrico as inspiration.

Self Directed Study
The exploration of skills, techniques and processes provides the vehicle for discovery, growth and self expression.
Just as the observations of the forms, shapes, lines and textures of the fruit developed you too have changed your way of thinking and expressing yourself through drawing. You have found methods, imagery and scale that appeal to you and play to your strengths. You have developed your own way of thinking and self expression. We want to see that in this task. Show us who you are as an artist.
You will have 4 lessons to complete this self directed task.
These lists are suggestive, not exhaustive:
